The Best Argument Against Professional Politicians Is a Football Coach from Alabama
Tommy Tuberville is pushing a ‘Big Idea…’
Ever since the idea of term limits for Congress started gaining steam, our professional political class has been warning us it is a terrible idea. One of their strongest arguments has to do with ‘specialization.’ In other words, ‘learning the ropes and understanding the intricacies of how government really works takes years of experience,’ they claim. They equate it to other professions such as engineering or medicine – after all, an engineer or doctor with ten years of experience is far more skilled than a ‘wet behind the ears’ neophyte…
This argument is persuasive but flawed. It assumes that politics, like engineering or medicine, is a profession. It is not – and it was never intended to be.
Our Founding Fathers envisioned a citizen legislature made up of individuals from all walks of life with each bringing their own different skills and perspectives. The idea that you could specialize in government was laughable (and reeked of the European aristocracy they were divesting from). Being a ‘Jack of all trades’ was actually considered more accomplished than someone who had specialized in only one field (think Benjamin Franklin).
A Football Coach from Alabama has Shown Himself Smarter than Every. Single. One. Of. Them.
Tommy Tuberville Was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2020. Because he had no real experience in politics he was derided by both Democrats and establishment RINO Republicans. Yet, he is proposing what is arguably the single smartest initiative in 50 years.
Professional politicians wear blinders. They see polls, talking points, and political advantage as their primary focus. Many times, they are more concerned with beating their political opponents than actually benefitting the people they represent. Thinking outside the box is risky and anathema to them. Because of this, big bold new ideas rarely get promoted. I would suggest it is time to leave this kind of political self-serving thinking behind.
Energy Independence Should Be the #1 National Security Concern
I won’t take a lot of ink to belabor this point. The modern world revolves around energy. If your nation has an abundance of it, you can grow and advance your quality of life. If you do not, you cannot. If some other country controls the amount of energy you have, you are at their mercy. These points are inarguable. Period.
We Have Been Betrayed
What if I said you could have a country that has an abundance of cheap clean energy? More energy than you could ever need and far cheaper than any sources we are currently using? That regardless of your view on Climate change, it would be carbon and pollution free? That it was safer than current forms of energy production and would even aid in cleaning up certain environmental problems? What if I also told you that the technology to do this was so advanced your country’s mastery of it would put you in the driver’s seat to influence global affairs for generations to come? In other words, your control of this technology would ensure your national security for a generation and allow you to advance the cause of human rights to a new level?
What if I told you this technology would satisfy conservatives’ demand for energy independence and also satisfy liberals’ demands for clean renewable energy?
What if I told you the United States has had the basics of this technology for 50 years and has recently greatly perfected it? What if I also told you that one recent U.S. President made the decision to not only shelve this technology but to actively sabotage it? What if I told you another recent U.S. President gave this technology to enemies of the United States?
This is Not a Republican vs Democrat Issue
We are talking about energy produced from thorium molten-salt reactors.
“Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R) is leading the push for an energy-independent America through reactors using thorium, a natural resource found in abundance domestically that produces both clean and safe energy. He called for an end to the destruction of the country’s stockpile and warned against Chinese progress in the technology that was given to them, as well as unrealistic “green” ambitions of Democrats, while highlighting the “huge national security risk” of energy dependency.”
Breitbart Article July 17, 2022
It was the Ruling Class Republican President George H. Bush who made the decision to not only once again shelve the technology but to include $50 million a year in our defense budget to destroy existing stockpiles of safe Uranium 233 (Thorium). The Bush family owes its massive wealth to the oil and gas industry, so perhaps this was simply self-serving… but it could arguably be considered treasonous.
What is undoubtedly treasonous (in my opinion) is what Democrat President Barrack Obama did – he gave the technology to China. China has now opened its first thorium molten-salt reactor and must be considered the world’s leader in this technology. It is not too late for the United States to catch up and reclaim a leadership position in this race for control of abundant clean energy, but time is running short.
It is critical to understand that this specific type of nuclear reactor is very different from anything you’ve ever heard of. It cannot meltdown (like Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, or Fukushima). It does not produce nuclear waste like current reactors (it actually consumes nuclear waste as fuel). It is terribly difficult to use the fuel of this reactor in nuclear weapons, and these reactors cost four to five times less to build. The United States is also sitting on top of a thousand year supply of Thorium - we need import nothing.
Tommy Tuberville’s point is simple. Except for Ruling Class special interests, no one is against the idea of clean, cheap, renewable energy and energy independence. The Biden Administration, however, has no plan to transition to that outcome. They are masochistically focused on ending the use of fossil fuels – regardless of whether or not a viable alternative exists. This leads to the (purposeful) destruction of the U.S. economy (not to mention, our national security). Instead, why not utilize the natural resources we have (oil and gas) while focusing on the continued development of an energy technology that really works? And, why not educate the general public sufficiently so that significant portions of the conservative and liberal population welcome it?
This is outside-the-political-box thinking. It is what many people call common sense.
The point of this article is not to advocate for thorium molten-salt reactors (although I think they are a GREAT idea), nor is the point to call for term limits (I believe that is a Band-Aid approach to the problem) … the point is that if we want to get back to electing representatives who will put the American people first, we need to start nominating non-professional politicians. Rather than people groomed all their lives in Ivy League schools, trained to use a whole lot of words to say nothing, and who will avoid risk at all cost, let’s put more coaches, teachers, dentists, plumbers, small business owners, engineers, and accountants in office.
You never know, we just might start solving problems rather than creating them.
