How Heroes Are Born
Courage is what you do in spite of your fear...
I’m going to tell you a story. It could be true, but if it were I would certainly change the names, details, and locations to protect everyone from political persecution…
There once was a woman who had spent her entire life in service to others. She was caring, not domineering. She was intelligent, but not boastful. She had a deep nurturing love for children and children loved her for it. Many of her peers were in awe of her abilities; some were very jealous… but she was respected by all. She was not confrontational and her voice was soft, but when it came to children, she never hesitated to speak her piece to the organizations – and people – who needed to hear it. Her messages were always respectful and polite, but her logic was keen and no one ever doubted the strength of her convictions. She was always confident because she had a lifetime of peer-acknowledged expertise in her field.
Like most Americans, this woman has a family. A strong, moral, and loving husband who helped her raise their wonderful children; she now proudly answers to the title of grandmother. Also like most Americans, she has led a busy life. Family, church, career, community service, and the occasional sacrifices needed to be a good neighbor leave little time for much other than sitting down at the end of a long day and watching the news and (maybe) a recorded show.
She would tell you she has enjoyed a satisfying life and even though she recently retired she remains incredibly busy. ‘How does that happen?’ you ask. Well, even if you remove career that still leaves family, church, community service, and the occasional sacrifices needed to be a good neighbor. You can add babysitting the grandkids to that list and… politics.
This woman has always considered herself conservative and has therefore always voted Republican. Over the last decade or so, however, there has been an uncomfortable feeling growing in the pit of her stomach, a sense that something wasn’t right in our country. Like most Americans who are incredibly busy, it had been easy to put these feelings on the back burner and mentally mark them for future reflection – but now… Now, she decided, maybe it was time to take a closer look.
She started, like all intellectually honest people would, by revisiting the claims of the political opposition. I’m not talking about the leftists and Democrats who obviously oppose our values, our morals, our culture, and our laws… I’m talking about the conservatives who the mainstream media always label as extremist or conspiratorial. She found some crazy theories and even some bona fide lunatics – but, she also discovered a whole universe of credible people and she quickly started realizing she was not alone in her journey. She found there was ample evidence and proof that much of what she was being told politically was a lie. She was shocked to discover the depths of the deception in the mainstream media – she had always been raised not to believe everything you hear, but this was outright coordinated propaganda. It was chilling to listen to formerly trusted news anchors calmly and glibly repeat talking points that supported a false narrative rather than the facts. She began seeking out what she’d always thought of as alternative media and relying on her own reasoning to figure out which talking heads and writers were trustworthy. Still a neophyte at politics, it was uncomfortable for her to start debating issues on social media and heartbreaking for her to realize the price for standing up could be to lose some so-called ‘friends.’
As hard as it was to talk about the issues, it was horrifying to realize our elections had been stolen. It was mind-numbing to finally understand that all those uneasy feelings in her stomach had been sympathetic symptoms of the growing authoritarian cancer growing in our government; to fully understand that the machinations of our media and the lying by our politicians were designed to persecute all political opposition, to silence dissent and consolidate one-party rule in America. It was almost paralyzing to admit that The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave was crumbling all around us.
Yet, she still found the courage to run and win an elected position in her local GOP precinct. With toes barely wet from dipping into the sea of politics she joined local political organizations and occasionally had the opportunity to ask questions of candidates. And then, one day, she found herself sitting in a large room full of people, most of whom had been following politics for far longer than she had. The speaker that day was a man who had secured the GOP nomination for his state’s Secretary of State position. He was confident and obviously popular with the room, yet he was full-on GOP establishment and had defeated the Primary candidate she had supported.
The woman knew she would vote for this man in the General election – it was imperative the Democrats be defeated and thwart the effort for one-party rule. Yet the more she listened, the more frustrated she became. It didn’t help her mood that earlier in the day she had discovered one GOP precinct unethically removing a MAGA candidate’s flyers from their door-knocker handout bags. She was surrounded by the GOP establishment good-old-boys club and when the Secretary of State candidate started talking about how the supporters of his defeated Primary opponent were mainly election deniers who didn’t understand the real world of politics, she felt like she was drowning. This was the same Good-Old-Boys club that had stood by and refused to defend President Trump when he was viciously attacked for every made-up issue from Russia collusion to stealing nuclear secrets. The same club that had voted to increase Visa guest workers taking American jobs while not lifting a finger to stop illegal immigration. The same group who claims to care about runaway spending yet votes for $Trillions in handouts, bailouts, and foreign aid. And now, right in front of her, the exact same people were essentially bragging about their ongoing efforts to throttle any efforts to tighten election integrity, investigate election fraud, or even care about the issue at all.
What must have gone through this woman’s mind? She wasn’t an expert on politics; she didn’t have the years in the trenches like many others in the room. Who was she to question the wisdom of those around her? Who would listen to her, anyway? She had no real credentials, no political pedigree – she was just a mother, a grandmother, an American, a Patriot…
Did she even consciously realize she’d put her hand in the air?
When they called on her, she stood and said, “I am offended by your comments.” She went on to explain she would be voting for him, but his non-understanding of his voter base was exactly why she had supported his primary opponent. She calmly explained, as if to a six-year-old, that if a significant portion of the electorate believed there was fraud it was incumbent on any real leader to transparently investigate those claims and that discarding and ridiculing those concerns was not only unprofessional but also a direct dereliction of the oath of office he hoped to soon take. In her quiet way, she brought the room to absolute silence.
Eventually, the candidate stuttered and mumbled something about fair elections and that, of course, the woman wasn’t who he had been referring to. He eagerly went to the next question with a female supporter who gushed praise over him, obviously trying to compensate for the awkward moment.
The woman sat in silence for the rest of the meeting, calmly ignoring the stares and whispers of those seated around her. After the meeting ended, she was walking to the door when a woman stopped her. Then, a man joined the conversation and soon an entire group of people surrounded her – all congratulating her for voicing what they had been feeling. After an overwhelming day, it was all the woman could do to hold back a tear…
Or, maybe the tear is mine… from thinking about how incredibly proud I am of this brave woman. A woman who found the courage to speak truth to power. A woman who believes in something bigger than herself. A woman who was willing to stand up and stand out. A woman who cares more about permanently changing the world than being temporarily uncomfortable. A woman who understands she doesn’t need to have credentials or be accepted into some club to act as a citizen… and a woman who is still driven by her love for children - and is determined to shape the world they will inherit from us.
That, of course, is assuming this story is true.
